Local Link Building: The 6 Sources That Actually Move the Map Pack

Not the national papers. Not the directories with 40 pages of plumbers. These six — in this order of effort-to-impact ratio.

The map pack doesn't read your DR

Local rankings run on a different fuel mix, and 'authority link building' as taught to national SEOs solves the wrong problem. A plumber in Leeds doesn't need DR 75 coverage; Leeds needs to believe Leeds-based sources trust this plumber. That means geographic relevance beats raw metrics by a wide margin in map-pack correlations — and six source types produce most of the leverage.

In our local campaigns, the pattern holds across 40+ service areas: a couple of local news placements beat a dozen generic guest posts; community-event coverage beats 'industry' blogs; and real citations on platforms real residents use beat any directory from an Fiverr gig spreadsheet.

The six sources, ranked by effort-to-impact

One: local and hyperlocal news — still stickiest signal per link. Two: sponsorship mentions on genuinely local organizations (youth football, festivals, neighborhood associations) — but participate, don't just send a check; pages that mention sponsors with actual local involvement survive audits. Three: city lifestyle blogs, the ones residents actually read. Four: regional business journals and chambers with editorial standards. Five: niche local directories that a resident would actually search. Six: neighboring-city coverage when your service area overlaps — geographic adjacency counts.

The pattern underneath all six: local links should answer the question 'would a skeptical resident find this mention plausible?' If the answer involves 'well, technically, it's a chamber of another county,' skip it.

The boring part that makes all six work

NAP consistency across profiles and mentions sounds remedial, yet in our audits, nearly half of multi-year local businesses carry an inconsistency somewhere — a relocated office, a tracking-number variant, a brand abbreviation from the founder's original listing. Algorithms aggregate entity confidence from these scraps; inconsistency leaks rankings everywhere it goes.

So the order of operations matters: fix NAP first, citations second, links third. We structured the local packages in exactly that order because skipping step one is how step three quietly underperforms.
