Link Building for Local Businesses: How to Run an Ongoing Campaign Month After Month

This campaign playbook turns local link building into a repeatable monthly process using community relationships, local resources, media opportunities and selective outreach.

Month one: clean the foundation

Audit major citations, local profiles, association memberships and partner listings. Fix inaccurate information and claim legitimate pages the business already deserves. This creates a baseline before active outreach starts.

At the same time, choose the service or location pages that matter most. Local link building should point toward a clear commercial objective rather than scatter links across every URL.

Month two: build one local resource

Publish something tied to the area and service: a seasonal maintenance checklist, permit explainer, neighborhood comparison, local cost guide or event resource. The subject should be useful enough that a local organization could share it without doing the business a favor.

Then identify community sites, local bloggers and publications where the resource fits. Outreach becomes easier because you are offering information, not merely asking for a backlink.

Month three: focus on relationships

Review suppliers, chambers, charities, schools, sports groups, trade associations and events connected to the business. Look for missing sponsor pages, member profiles, partner resources or recaps.

Do not create relationships solely for links. The most durable local mentions document activity the business was already willing to support.

Month four and beyond: add media and editorial work

Set alerts for local stories connected to your expertise and offer short comments when relevant. Pitch guest articles to regional or trade publications only when the topic fits their audience.

A local backlink service can supplement the campaign, but it should not replace the local knowledge and relationships that make the strongest opportunities possible.

Repeat the process without repeating the footprint

Each month should create new reasons for mentions rather than duplicate last month’s placement pattern. One month may produce an association link and local-news quote; another may produce a guest article and community resource link.

Track opportunities, not just delivered links. Local markets are finite, so forcing a fixed volume eventually pushes campaigns toward weaker sources.
