What DR actually is (and isn't)
Domain Rating counts the strength and volume of links pointing at a site, as seen by one crawler. It's a solid rough proxy for authority — and it's blind to how those links got there. A site can earn its DR 70 from a decade of journalism or from being an expired domain that inherited 40,000 redirects last October. These sites look identical on a marketplace row and couldn't be more different.
The four inflation plays we screen for: expired-domain takeovers (domain carcass repurposed as link farm), redirect chains (dozens of squatted domains pointed at one target), link rings (farm sites interlinking to pump each other up), and comment-spam velocity (thousands of junk links nobody's bothering to disavow). None of these produce referral value. Three of them are nearly free to run.
The two columns that expose inflation
Traffic trend and outbound mix. Inflated DR sites almost always have organic traffic that fell off a cliff at some date — or never existed. Legitimate authority attracts some organic visibility because authority should attract visibility organically. Run the 12-month trend on any DR number you're about to pay for; if it doesn't make sense, the number isn't authority, it's residue.
Outbound mix is the second tell: open three pages on the site and look at who they link to. Sixteen unrelated buyer niches with exact-match anchors, and that DR 70 placement is a museum of other people's bad decisions.
Our ask, and our rule
We verify DR, and then grade sites on the two extra columns before they enter the marketplace. If we're honest about trade-offs: that shrinks inventory visibly, raises our unit costs, and occasionally costs us buyers who just want the biggest number cheaply. We're fine with that trade — because inflated labels mean we're selling you the farm in a three-piece suit, and that catches up with everyone eventually.
