Backlinks vs Referring Domains: What Is the Difference and Which Metric Matters More?

If example.com links to your site from five articles, you have five backlinks from one referring domain. If five separate websites each link once, you have five backlinks from five referring domains.

That difference matters because the second pattern represents five independent sources rather than repeated references from one site.

Sitewide links, archive pages and duplicated templates can create large numbers of backlinks automatically. A profile showing 50,000 backlinks may still rely on only a small number of actual websites.

This is why raw backlink count should never be the only metric used to judge authority.

Referring-domain count helps measure source diversity. It is useful for competitor comparisons, growth tracking and identifying whether authority depends too heavily on a small set of websites.

But the count still needs quality context. One hundred weak domains are not necessarily stronger than twenty excellent ones.

Backlink count can reveal how often your brand or pages are referenced and whether one source is linking repeatedly. It can also help identify sitewide links or duplicated placements that deserve closer inspection.

The useful question is what created the count, not whether the number is large.

Track referring domains for breadth and backlink count for repetition. Then inspect the important sources manually for relevance, traffic and context.
