The defining feature is manipulation, not one specific tactic
There is no single visual style that makes a link scheme. The common thread is creating links at scale mainly to influence rankings rather than because the references are useful or editorially justified.
The same tactic can look very different depending on why and how it is used.
Common patterns include engineered exchanges and paid footprints
Large reciprocal networks, automated link creation, hidden paid placements, private networks and repeated exact-match guest-post campaigns can all become problematic when the ranking objective overwhelms any real editorial purpose.
Scale and repetition often make the pattern clearer.
Legitimate relationships can still include links
Partners, suppliers, associations and sponsors may naturally link to one another because a relationship exists. The fact that two businesses exchange value does not automatically make every resulting link manipulative.
The question is whether the link accurately documents something real and useful.
Use the “would this exist without SEO?” test
If the article, partnership or resource would still make sense if search engines ignored the link, the relationship is easier to justify. If the entire page exists only to pass anchor text, the risk is much clearer.
Prioritize contextual placements where the citation genuinely helps the reader.
