First, “dofollow” is not an HTML attribute
People use dofollow to describe a normal hyperlink that does not carry attributes such as rel="nofollow" or rel="sponsored". There is no rel="dofollow" attribute. The term is simply SEO shorthand for a link that has not been specifically qualified in those ways.
Nofollow, sponsored and UGC attributes communicate information about the relationship between the linking page and destination. Google documents these attributes in its current outbound-link guidance.
Why SEOs care about the distinction
Links have historically been part of how search engines understand references and authority across the web, so marketers pay attention to whether a link may be considered for ranking systems. That is where the obsession with dofollow comes from.
The mistake is turning the attribute into the only quality test. A normal link from a weak spam page is not automatically valuable, and a qualified link from a major industry publication can still send relevant visitors, build recognition and lead to future citations.
What nofollow does not mean
Nofollow does not mean the page is invisible, the link cannot be clicked, or the placement has no marketing value. A reader can still follow it. Analytics can still record referral visits. Journalists and bloggers can still discover your resource through it.
For PR, sponsorships, community mentions and large publications with strict outbound-link policies, qualified links are normal. Rejecting every opportunity that is not dofollow can cause a brand to skip exactly the publications real customers read.
Paid links require a different conversation
Google recommends marking paid links with rel="sponsored" and says nofollow is also acceptable for that purpose. The important distinction is the commercial relationship, not whether a marketplace calls a product premium or editorial.
If you buy placements, understand how the publisher handles sponsorship. Do not assume that paying extra for an unqualified link makes the arrangement safer or more legitimate. Search policies focus on intent and manipulation, not sales terminology.
How to evaluate a link in practice
Start with the site, page, topic, audience and placement context. Then note the attribute. That ordering prevents a technical label from distracting you from the larger question: is this a credible place for your brand to be referenced?
If you specifically need to compare dofollow backlink options, use the attribute as one field in the decision, not the entire decision. Relevance and editorial quality still come first.
