First confirm the link is actually live
Open the source page, verify the destination URL and check that the link is not hidden behind scripts or a broken redirect. This rules out basic delivery issues.
A vendor report is not a substitute for checking the actual page.
Check whether the source page is discoverable
Pages that are orphaned, blocked or low value may be crawled infrequently. If the source itself is not indexed, reporting and potential SEO value may also be limited.
Look at internal links to the source page and whether the site publishes content Google regularly visits.
Google does not expose a complete live backlink database
Search Console link reports are useful but should not be interpreted as a real-time list of every known backlink. Reporting can be sampled, delayed or organized differently from third-party tools.
Absence from a report does not automatically mean the link has zero value.
Judge the placement, not just tool visibility
Relevant context, a legitimate source and a crawlable page matter more than whether the backlink appears in every dashboard on the same day.
Use contextual placements where source-page quality is transparent.
