Keywords do not come with backlink price tags
Two keywords with the same search volume can require completely different levels of authority. One SERP may be full of niche blogs with ten referring domains each; another may be dominated by national brands and publications with thousands.
The practical task is to estimate the competitive gap for the actual result page you want to enter.
Inspect page-level referring domains
Domain-level authority is useful context, but the pages ranking for your keyword may have very different direct link profiles. Record the number and quality of referring domains pointing to each top result.
Also check whether those links are relevant and editorial. Twenty meaningful citations can be harder to compete with than a hundred low-value links.
Compare content before blaming authority
If the ranking pages answer the query more clearly, have better examples, stronger trust signals or a format users prefer, backlinks alone may not close the gap. Improve the page first so new authority has something worth amplifying.
Search intent changes too. A guide cannot rank reliably in a SERP dominated by product pages just because it has more backlinks.
Use a range and milestones
Instead of saying “we need 37 links,” plan an initial set of strong referring domains, observe movement, then reassess. If rankings respond, continue. If they do not, investigate content, intent, internal links and source quality.
This creates a feedback loop rather than spending the full budget on a guess.
Prioritize the strongest gaps
A page may already have enough authority but weak internal support. Another may be excellent but sit twenty referring domains behind the leaders. Link building should focus where it solves a visible disadvantage.
For competitive keywords, contextual links from topic-relevant pages are often more useful than chasing a raw volume target.
