Anchor Text in SEO: Practical Best Practices for Link Building

Anchor text should help readers understand the destination. A good link-building strategy uses descriptive language naturally and avoids forcing the same commercial keyword across every placement.

Anchor text has a reader job before an SEO job

The clickable words should set an expectation about the page on the other side. “Google’s spam policies,” “our pricing guide,” a brand name and a raw URL all communicate different things to a reader.

The best anchor is usually the wording that fits the sentence and describes the destination honestly. Optimization should work inside that constraint, not override it.

Common anchor types

Branded anchors use the company or product name. URL anchors use the domain or full address. Descriptive or partial-match anchors explain the resource in natural language. Exact-match anchors use the precise target keyword.

None of these is automatically good or bad. Problems arise when one type—especially highly commercial exact-match wording—dominates because every placement was instructed to use the same phrase.

Why exact-match repetition is risky

Writers rarely choose identical wording independently across dozens of websites. When the same optimized anchor appears repeatedly, the profile can look manufactured even if the individual links are otherwise acceptable.

Use exact wording only where it reads naturally and do not build a campaign around trying to hit a specific keyword percentage. Context and destination relevance matter more than a tidy anchor chart.

Match anchors to the destination

A homepage often attracts brand and URL anchors naturally. A detailed guide can earn descriptive anchors based on its title or subject. A commercial category page may receive a mix of brand, descriptive and product-language references.

This variation should follow how people actually refer to the page. If the anchor would sound strange in a normal editorial sentence, it is probably too optimized.

Review anchors at the profile level

One anchor cannot be judged in isolation. Export your main referring-domain anchors and look for obvious repetition, misleading wording and large clusters pointing to the same target page.

If a profile is already heavily optimized, new outreach should prioritize natural branded and descriptive references rather than doubling down on the same phrase.

Give publishers room to edit

Editors may change the anchor to fit their style. That is often a positive signal of real editorial control. Trying to lock every publication into exact wording can make the relationship feel like link placement rather than publishing.

For guest posts and niche edits, provide a preferred meaning rather than a rigid phrase whenever possible. The surrounding sentence should win the argument.
